During a Brazilian Navy expedition to Trindade Island for the International Geophysical Year, civilian photographer Almiro Baraúna took a sequence of photos from the deck of the NE Almirante Saldanha. They show a Saturn-shaped object passing over the island's peaks. People on deck said they saw it too. The Navy developed the film on board and kept the matter quiet for about a month. The press broke the story in February 1958. The Navy then issued an official note, and a federal deputy (Sérgio Magalhães) formally demanded answers in the Chamber of Deputies. The Navy Minister wrote that the case had been kept secret so an internal inquiry could be finished. A Navy officer's report, known through a 1964 leak, said a prior photomontage could be neither proved nor disproved. The photos remain disputed: a hoax by Baraúna has been argued but not demonstrated. The primary trail I could read directly is thin: one parliamentary document. The Navy documents are known through a researcher's transcriptions.

Plausibility weighs how well an account fits where secrecy hides the documents by design, so missing records never count against it. Strength measures what is documented. Assessed 2026-10-23.

On the record

  • RIC 2957/1958 (official parliamentary record). Dep. Sérgio Magalhães asked eight questions. Among them: whether the negatives were examined for montage; why the case had been kept secret for about a month. The justification notes the Navy's official press note and states that no depositions were taken from the crew. The request was approved and forwarded as ofício 10163 on 20 March 1958.
  • The official Navy press note of 22 Feb 1958 is known to exist from the RIC's reference to it. Its text is reproduced by Borges, not read here in original.
  • In 2010 the Navy certified that 'nothing appears' in its records (Certidão 60-3/2010), in the Defence Ministry's answer to a deputy's request.
