Rocketdyne / Aerojet Rocketdyne (L3Harris)

Two rocket-engine lineages: Aerojet, founded in 1942 by the same GALCIT circle as JPL (including Jack Parsons), and Rocketdyne, which built the Saturn V and Shuttle engines. They merged in 2013 and L3Harris bought the company in 2023. Monica Reza spent her career here and co-invented Mondaloy, the AFRL co-funded alloy at the heart of the 'Mondaloy chain' theory.
On the record
- L3Harris completed its ~$4.7B acquisition of Aerojet Rocketdyne on 28 Jul 2023.
- Mondaloy was co-invented by Jacinto (Rocketdyne) and Hardwick (Rockwell Science Center); AR1 depends on it.
- Jan 2026: L3Harris agreed to sell a majority of its space propulsion and power unit to AE Industrial, reviving the Rocketdyne name.
- Jul 1959: the Sodium Reactor Experiment at SSFL suffered partial fuel melting with releases.
- 26 Jul 1994: Heiney and Pugh killed burning reactive waste at SSFL; Rocketdyne pleaded guilty to environmental felonies and paid $6.5M. No one was charged with the deaths.
- Russian patent RU2301276C2 for the alloy was granted to UTC in 2007.
