Saucers over the Capitol

Front page the day after the Samford press conference. Centre column: 'Another Strange "Blip" Seen on Radar Here; Check Finds Nothing / Pentagon Says "Saucers" Are Natural Phenomena Caused by Inversion', by John A. Giles. It reports a new target on the National Airport radar about 1 a.m. that a passing aircraft could not find, and quotes Samford: 'the recent Washington sightings were caused by temperature inversion' and 'We have found nothing ... to show them vehicles, materials or missiles directed against the United States.' Also a cross-reference to 'Fighter Pilots at New Castle Stay Alert For More Saucer Reports. Page A-3', and a top-centre editorial cartoon with a flying saucer and the Capitol ('Calling Mars...'). · Evening Star, 30 July 1952, p. A-1. On two weekends in July 1952, radar at Washington National Airport and Andrews Air Force Base tracked unknown targets over the capital, including restricted airspace over the White House and Capitol. Jet interceptors were scrambled; pilots saw lights that vanished as they closed in and reappeared when they left. Pictures of the Capitol dome with lights above it ran nationwide.
