Natural cause proposed, not demonstrated

In July 1947 the Army announced it had recovered a 'flying disc' near Roswell and replaced the story with a weather balloon within a day; the Air Force's later Project Mogul explanation is proposed, not demonstrated, since no specific balloon flight was ever matched.

“not of this earth”
Maj. Jesse Marcel, Roswell Army Air Field intelligence officer, decades later · source

Roswell Army Air Field issued a press release saying it had recovered a 'flying disc' from a ranch near Corona. Within a day, Eighth Air Force headquarters replaced the story with a weather balloon. Decades later the intelligence officer who handled the debris, Major Jesse Marcel, said the material was 'not of this earth'. Witnesses described thin foil that sprang back to shape, I-beams with strange symbols, and bodies taken to a base hospital. For believers it is the moment a crash retrieval program was born.
