Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL)

The Air Force's whole science and technology enterprise, formed in 1997 from the Phillips, Wright, Rome and Armstrong labs. Neil McCasland commanded it from 2011 to 2013. It co-funded Monica Reza's Mondaloy alloy and, through AFOSR, funded Sergey Macheret's plasma work. That makes it the one institution touching three names on Igor's list.

On the record

  • Formed 31 Oct 1997 by merging Phillips, Wright, Rome and Armstrong labs plus AFOSR. HQ Wright-Patterson.
  • McCasland commanded AFRL from May 2011 to Jul 2013.
  • X-51A Waverider's best flight, Mach 5.1 on 1 May 2013, flew on a Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne scramjet during McCasland's command.
  • AFRL and Aerojet Rocketdyne tested Mondaloy preburner hardware in the Hydrocarbon Boost demonstrator at Edwards.
  • AFRL Edwards published Eric Davis's Teleportation Physics Study in Aug 2004 (AFRL-PR-ED-TR-2003-0034).
  • No AFRL employee wrote an AAWSAP DIRD, but several DIRDs use AFRL figures and contracts (Lightcraft, HPM, positrons).
  • AARO's Historical Record Report Vol. 1 (Mar 2024) found no verified evidence of US recovery or reverse-engineering of non-human craft.
