Person

Ingo Swann
Born in Telluride, Colorado, in 1933, Swann was a painter in New York who became the most tested psychic of the Cold War. He coined the term 'remote viewing', and he proposed viewing a target from nothing but its map coordinates. With Hal Puthoff and Russell Targ at SRI he helped turn that into a CIA-funded program, and he later developed the step-by-step 'coordinate remote viewing' method used to train the Army's psychic spies at Fort Meade. He died in New York in 2013.
On the record
- 1971–72: out-of-body experiments with Karlis Osis at the American Society for Psychical Research; Osis judged the hits at odds of 40,000 to one.
- 1972: at Stanford, the shielded magnetometer of physicist Arthur Hebard appeared to change its output while Swann focused on it, which helped bring CIA funding to SRI.
- 1972 onward: SRI remote-viewing research with Puthoff and Targ (Project Scanate), and training of military remote viewers in coordinate remote viewing.
- Books: To Kiss Earth Goodbye (1975), Everybody's Guide to Natural ESP (1991), Penetration (1998).
