The 'Interplanetary Phenomenon Unit' report (22 July 1947)
Lead · 22 July 1947 (released 1995) · New Mexico
Two parts with very different standing. Army counterintelligence FOIA replies say an 'Interplanetary Phenomenon Unit' did exist as an informal in-house project under Army intelligence until the late 1950s, its records passed to the Air Force; critics read the name as a mail-room 'input processing unit'. Separately, a report said to be the unit's own, dated 22 July 1947, reached Timothy Cooper from an anonymous source in 1995 and describes AFSWP and Sandia teams at the 1947 New Mexico recoveries; it is unauthenticated.
Overview
- Sourced part: Army FOIA replies confirm an informal 'Interplanetary Phenomenon Unit' that ended in the late 1950s, its records sent to AFOSI.
- Disputed part: a 1947 'IPU report' from an anonymous 1995 source, naming Col. Hasbrouck (a real AFSWP officer), Marshall and Oppenheimer.
- Gerb's view: the report may echo Kissner's 1994 statement, not the reverse.
